The Jasper N. Deahl Award is an alumni recognition program designed to honor CEHS alumni for career achievement, community engagement, and/or loyalty to West Virginia University. The 2016 recipients are Harry Bostic, Joanie Davis, Candi Johnson, Ruth Lewis, Joy Myers, Laura VanHorn, Lonny Watro and Mary Beth Sickles (honorary recipient). Ruth Lewis earned her undergraduate degree in 1955 in Elementary Classroom 1-9, her master’s degree in Elementary Education in 1956, and her Ed.D. in Reading and Higher Education in 1970, all from West Virginia University. She began her career teaching primary school in a non-graded, two-room school in Brandonville, West Virginia. She then went on to teach as a professor of education at West Liberty State College from 1960 to 1976, serving as chairperson of the Department of Education for four of those years. In 1976, Ruth joined Brooke County Public Schools as the Reading/Language Arts Supervisor, until her retirement from Brooke County in 1989. From 1989-1995, Ruth again taught at West Liberty State College, as an adjunct professor. Ruth has served as a past president for the West Virginia Reading Association, the Brooke County Association of Retired School Employees, the Friends of Brooke County Public Library (current), and as the clerk of Session at First Presbyterian Church, Wellsburg (18 years).
Annie Vopal received a Cornetet Award for online professional development courses. The courses discussed developing number sense, proportional reasoning, and algebraic thinking. Annie is looking forward to applying the strategies she learned and sharing information with colleagues. Congratulations Annie!
Dr. Kay Clawson is now on the Board of Trustees for the International Educational Foundation, 2016-2022

Nellie Virginia Smith, a chapter life member, passed away on December 18, 2015. Nellie served as a Secretary at Wheeling Park High School until her retirement.

Opal Virginia Lantz, 97, of Follansbee, WV, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2015, at Wyngate Senior Community, Weirton, WV. Opal was employed by Brooke County Board of Education and taught for 44 years at Colliers, Edgewood, Follansbee Junior High and Follansbee Middle School. She was a devoted and faithful member of the Follansbee United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Mixed Class, Delta Kappa Gamma, Twentieth Century Club, Bridge Club and GG's.
Congrats to Sue Hvizdos on receiving the Lucille Cornetet Professional Development Grant for $1800. This will allow Sue to attend a three day workshop in Houston and bring back a set of classroom graphing calculators for her students.
Sara Sweeney received the 2015 Annie Webb Blanton International Scholarship toward her Doctoral work at Grand Canyon University.

Dr. Kay Clawson, West Virginia, is the Northeast Regional Director! She is past state organization president of West Virginia and past chair of the International Leadership Development Committee. She has been an international speaker and was recognized in the northeast for demonstrating the international theme. At the state organization level, Clawson was selected as her state's Achievement Award recipient. Professionally, she recently retired as Director of Graduate Studies of Education at West Liberty University and as Professional Development Schools liaison to five schools. She says, “My philosophy has always been one of facilitating educational endeavors.”
